on the proportion of colour-marked offspring. Labelling of living spermatozoa with fluorescein isothiocyanate was used to establish the identity of spermatozoa recovered from the female tract and/or associated with eggs following mixed inseminations. Little difference in the proportion of the two sperm populations present in the female tract was apparent 6 hr after insemination but, by 13 hr, the spermatozoa of the superior buck predominated in all segments of the tract. Moreover, a higher proportion of the spermatozoa found in association with the eggs was contributed by the superior buck following either intravaginal or intratubal mixed insemination 10 hr before ovulation. Although one factor in selective fertilization is a differential survival of the two sperm populations, compensation for this factor by intratubal deposition of equivalent numbers of active uterine spermatozoa did not raise the level of fertilization achieved by the inferior buck. Human Sperm Aster Formation and Chromatin Configuration in Rabbit Oocytes Following Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection Using a Piezo-Micromanipulator

In human fertilization, the sperm centrosome nucleates a radial array of microtubules called the sperm aster. The sperm aster is responsible for apposition of male and female pronuclei, and later gives rise to the first meiotic spindle. The objective of this study was to determine microtubule assembly and chromatin configuration in rabbit oocytes following intracytoplasmic injection with human ...

O-8: Molecular Mechanisms of Membrane Fusion Involved in Fertilization

Background: Assisted fertilization procedures are a currently widespread practice to regulate reproduction in humans and animals. The arising question is why the human being manipulating gametes to generate new individuals, if we do not understand yet the molecular mechanism of fertilization?. Successful completion of fertilization in mammals is dependent on three membrane fusion events: 1. the...

EVALUATION OF IN VITRO FERTILIZATION POTENTIAL AND SPERM PARAMETERS IN ACRYLAMIDE TREATED MICE

Background & Aims: Today, with lifestyle changes, the tendency to use packaged food, street food, and fast food has increased, and most of them contain Acrylamide. One of the most important side effects of Acrylamide is toxicity in the reproductive system. In this study, the long-term effects of Acrylamide on in Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and sperm parameters were investigated. Materials & ...

Evaluation of frozen thawed cauda epididymal sperms and in vitro fertilizing potential of bovine sperm collected from the cauda epididymal

In the present study, the fertilizing potential of semen recovered from slaughtered bulls epididymis was evaluated after cryopreservation, by conventional techniques and flow cytometry methods. The cauda epididymal was dissected and sperm were recovered and evaluated for volume, sperm concentration, and membrane and acrosome integrity using a flow cytometer. Sperm fertility potential was tested...

Sperm transport and retention at the fertilization site is orchestrated by a chemical guidance and oviduct movement.

In mammals, only a few spermatozoa arrive at the fertilization site. During the last step in the journey to the egg, apart from their self-propulsion, spermatozoa may be assisted by oviduct movement and/or a guidance mechanism. The proportion of rabbit spermatozoa that arrive at the fertilization site was determined under in vivo conditions, in which either the ovulation products (secreting che...
